Carlos wins ATF 14-Under doubles title in Malaysia

MANILA -- Top seeds Ma. Carmencita Isabela Carlos of the Philippines and Hannah Seen Ean Yip of Malaysia won the girls' doubles title in the Selangor 1st Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) 14-Under Series that ended last Sunday in Malaysia.

Carlos and Yip defeated second seeds Chloe Chong Zhi Jing of Malaysia and Yisoo Han of South Korea, 6-1, 6-0, in their championship match at the Kelana Jaya Tennis Complex, according to the ATF 14-Under website.

The duo earned a seat in the finals after beating Malaysians Li Ying Chan and Sze Xuan Lim, 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinal round, while Jing and Han scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Malaysians Lydia Liong Ting En and Xin Hung Tan in the other semifinal match.

Meanwhile, second-ranked Carlos bowed to top seed local Elsa Wan, 3-6, 2-6, in the finals of the singles category.

Nina Angeline Alcala, also from the Philippines, made an early exit when she absorbed a 4-6, 1-6 loss to Malaysian wild card Yu Chi Chan, who was eliminated by Wan, 0-6, 1-6, in the second round.

In the boys’ division, fourth seed Malaysian Leroy Young won the singles title after pulling off a 6-2, 6-1 victory over unseeded compatriot Mitsuki Wei Kang Leong in the final round.

Vietnam’s Minhnhat Nguyen and Quang Vinh Nguyen were crowned boys' doubles champions after scoring a win over third seeds Leong and Yong, 7-5, 6-3.

A total of 90 junior players from 15 countries joined the tournament organized by the Selangor Tennis Association. (PNA)
