KUALA LUMPUR -- The Philippines failed to win a medal during the start of the 9th ASEAN Para Games powerlifting competition on Monday at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibit Center (MITEC) Hall 3 in Jalan Duta here.

Achelle Guion, a veteran of the 2012 London Paralympics, and Marydol Pamati-an, a bronze winner in the 2015 Singapore ASEAN Para Games, both missed the podium in the women's 41kg category.

Guion, a silver medalist in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, tried to lift 70kg in her first and second attempt, and 72kg in the third attempt but all were declared bad lift.

Pamati-an's attempts of 62kg (first) and 65kg (second and third) were also declared bad lift.

The gold medal was awarded to Indonesian Nur Jannah Kamsyah Karem, who had a best lift of 71kg in her third attempt.

She lifted 65kg in her first attempt and 65kg in the second.

Malaysian Nurul Rabiatul Adawiyah Bakri got the silver medal with her best lift of 38kg in her third attempt. She lifted 30kg in the first and 34kg in the second attempt.

In the men's division, Romeo Tayawa registered a best lift of 110kg to finish fourth in the 49kg category.

He failed to lift 113kg and 118kg in his second and third attempts.

Vietnamese Le Van Cong won the gold medal with a new meet record of 181kg.

Laotian Pia submitted the second best lift of 130kg while his compatriot, Simay Eay, lifted 114kg to clinch the bronze medal.

The other members of the Philippine powerlifting team are Paralympians Adeline Dumapong and Agustin Kitan.

Kitan, who saw action in the 2012 London Paralympics and 2016 Rio Paralympics, is scheduled to see action on Tuesday in the men's 59kg event.

Dumapong, who won the country's first medal in the Paralympics when she got the bronze in Sydney 17 years ago, will compete on Thursday. (PNA)
