MANILA -- The Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) will be sending its top junior players to three major tournaments abroad.
The boys' 14-under team of Marc Andrei Jarata, Axl Lajon Gonzaga, and Rupert Ohrelle Tortal will compete in the World Juniors Championships Pre-Qualifying round on March 5-10, while the girls' 16-under team composed of Angelica Alcala, Amanda Gabrielle Zoleta, and Ma. Patricia Lim will join the Junior Fed Cup Pre-Qualifying round on March 12-17.
Both tournaments will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The 12-year-old Jarata is from Agoo, La Union. The Grade 7 student at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University has won the 14-under (2018) and 12-under (2017) titles in the Andrada Cup. He has competed in the World Juniors in Thailand last year.
Jarata and Zoleta both attended the 14-Under Development Training Camp in Thailand in 2017.
Meanwhile, Alexandra Eala, Ma. Carmencita Carlos, and Julia Asaliah will represent the country in the World Juniors Championships Final Qualifying Round in Nonthaburi, Thailand on April 2-7.
Michael Eala II, Jose Antonio Tria, and Matthew Anton Garcia have been named to the Junior Davis Cup team that will see action in Kuching, Malaysia on April 9-14.
Alexandra, 12, has won the Les Petits As-Le Mondial Lacoste Junior Championships in Tarbes, France last month. For her victory, she got a wild card in the French Open Juniors in June.
Carlos, 13, is currently No. 1792 in the ITF Juniors rankings. She played two tournaments in Kathmandu, Nepal and one in Phnom Penh, Cambodia this month.
Michael, the elder brother of Alexandra, is ranked No. 418. He reached the doubles quarterfinal round at the China Junior 4 in Shenzhen two weeks ago. He also competed in the Hong Kong ITF Juniors last month. Tria (1272) and Garcia (1248) also participated in Tennis Cambodia ITF Juniors. (PNA)
