POC executive board meeting tackles leadership turnover

MANILA -- The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) will hold a special executive board meeting on March 5 at the POC headquarters in Philsports, Pasig City.

In a memorandum dated Feb. 27, secretary general Stephen Hontiveros said the agenda of the meeting is the formal turnover to the newly elected POC president Victorico Vargas and chairman Abraham Tolentino.

Vargas, president of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines, Inc. (ABAP), defeated Jose Cojuangco Jr. of the Equestrian Association of the Philippines, during the POC elections on Feb. 23 at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City.

Tolentino of the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines, on the other hand, won as chairman over Ting Ledesma of Philippine Table Tennis Federation, Inc.

Expected to attend the meeting are karatedo's Jose Romasanta (first vice president), soft tennis's Jeff Tamayo (second vice president), wushu's Julian Camacho (treasurer), canoe-kayak's Jonie Go (auditor) and board members Atty. Clint Aranas (archery), Cynthia Carrion (gymnastics), Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay Jr. (chess), Robert Mananquil (billiards and snooker) and Mikee Cojuangco, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) representative to the Philippines.

The meeting may also tackle the status of Hontiveros as secretary general, a position appointed by the POC president.

According to reports, Hontiveros, who is the president of the Philippine Handball Federation, Inc., will be replaced by Patrick Gregorio, the secretary general of ABAP.

Sepak takraw's Karen Tanchanco-Caballero is also reported to be appointed as deputy secretary general. (PNA)
