TUGUEGARAO CITY -- Cagayan athletes reasserted their sports prowess as they emerged overall champions for the third straight year in the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association meet which ended at the Cagayan Sports Complex in this city Thursday.

Tallying 114 gold, 89 silver, and 104 bronze medals for a 307-medal finish, Cagayan bested eight other athletic divisions and reaffirmed its three-year feat after winning in 2016 and 2017 CAVRAA meets.

Based on the Games Result and Records Committee documentation signed by committee chairperson Denis Agbayani and eight other members, Cagayan delegates were the runaway winners in both elementary (53 golds-31 silvers-49 bronzes) and secondary (61-58-55) levels.

Ranked second was Nueva Vizcaya with a harvest of 67-64-82 for a total of 213 medals.

Perennial second placer, Isabela, was dislodged anew to place third with its 57-66-79 medal tally.

Fourth was Tuguegarao City with 50-37-50 while the City of Ilagan placed fifth, romping away with 47- 57-52.

Sixth-ranked Quirino tallied 27-34-48 while seventh placer Santiago City ran away with 24-27-31.

Eight-ranked Cauayan City managed to snag 11 golds, 21 silvers and 35 bronzes while perennial tail-ender Batanes island-province, which entered only in some events due to manpower and fund constraints, took only three golds, a lone silver and a lone bronze for a five-medal finish.

The winning athletes will represent the Cagayan Valley region in the Palarong Pambansa slated to be held on April 16-20 in Ilocos Sur.

The CAVRAA banner was turned over by Tuguegarao City Mayor Jefferson Soriano to the next host, Cauayan City, through Mayor Bernard Faustino Dy in 2019. (PNA)
