OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental -- General Santos City kept its over-all leadership even as Davao City is now in close second in the penultimate day of action of the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Games here.
As of press time, the Generals are still leading with a total of 44 gold medals plus 47 silvers and 48 bronzes while the Durians are now in close second spot with 43 golds, 21 silvers and 16 bronzes.
Former early leader Davao del Norte is now in third with 38-27-36 medal count followed by Zamboanga City (38-11-25).
“Pwede pa mag-change ang final (overall) medal tally kasi marami pang events and hindi pa natapos mostly sa ball games (The final overall medal tally can still change because many events aren't finished yet, mostly ball games),” said Karlo Pates of the Philippine Sports Commission's Media Center at the Misamis Occidental Province Athletic Complex.
Completing the top 15 are Koronadal City (26-29-38), Tagum (26-26-21), Cotabato Province (26-23-18), South Cotabato (22-34-28), Iligan (17-20-20), Dipolog (11-6-4), Panabo (8-7-3), Cagayan de Oro (6-4-7), Plaridel (5-8-5), Butuan (5-3-4), Bukidnon (4-18-12).

Twelve-year old Thea Diane Canda captured two golds in the Girls 12 & under 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly while Francisco Cordero, also 12, took the gold in the Boys 12 & under 100m breaststroke.
Canda also anchored the Generals composed also of Krisha Joanna Apin, Jazmine Kay Balaod and Denice Alexie Agayan in winning the Girls 15 & under 200m freestyle relay with a time of 2:05.12.
They were followed by Davao del Norte (2:09.16) and Bukidnon (2:18.49).
The Generals got four golds in Pencak Silat courtesy of Ommar Atong (Class A 39-43 kg., Tanding Teenager Boys), Benjamin Zabpitan (Class D 51-55 kg., Tanding Teenager Boys), Ivan Dumaraya (Class E 55-59 kg., Tanding Teenager Boys) and Hazel Mar Padilla (Class E 55-57 kg. Tanding Teenager Girls).
Gen. Santos City also got three golds in live sticks event of arnis. Wency May Magundag (11-12 Girls +35 kg.), CJ Carl Tizon (11-12 Boys +35 kg. to 40 kg.) beat their rivals while Pauleen Ordiz paired with Magundag to whip Tagum’s Jamella Engging and Kandra Mae Amorin in the 7-12 Girls full contact event.
In karatedo, Kherlvin Lloyd Caranay (Kumite 14-15 Boys +70 kgs.) and Sean Paul Alexander Gica (Kumite Boys 8-13 +45 kg.) struck golds for Davao City while Zamboanga got three golds from Kent Sebastian Perez (Kumite 14-15 Boys -52 kg.), Abdul Rashid Antao (Kumite 14-15 Boys -63 kg.) and Ray Angelo Silva (Kumite 14-15 Boys -70 kgs.).
Cotabato also earned two golds from Micho Bryan Jay Geolegue (Kumite 8-13 Boys -32 kgs.) and Kitch Catanyag (Kumite 8-13 Boys -37 kgs.).
In lawn tennis, the tandem of Davao’s Theresa Claire Nacito and Jessica Mae Carcueva pocketed the gold in the Girls Individual doubles by whipping the duo of Iligan’s Rovie Baulete and Ella Freil Natividad, 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
Mati (Jonamil Prado/Ma. Jaden Orquia) and Gen. Santos City (Laliana Rose Denigo/Febe Lagarde) settled for the bronze.
Oroquieta’s Jude Abelo and Jowel Bandala walloped Davao’s Earljan Casal and Kurt Jeric Haro, 6-2, 6-1 for the gold in the Boys individual doubles.
