BINAN CITY, Laguna-- From out of nowhere, a new Filipino world boxing champion emerges.

Reymart Gaballo took home the interim WBA bantamweight championship after beating American opponent Stephon Young in front of the latter's home country crowd in Hollywood, Florida, USA on Saturday (Philippine Time).

In a battle of unbeaten fighters, the General Santos-based Gaballo dominated the St. Louis-based Young from the start, even scoring a knockdown en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Two judges gave Gaballo a 117-110 lead, while the third judge had it 118-109 also in favor of Gaballo, who moved up to 19-0-0 while joining Jerwin Ancajas and Donnie Nietes as the active Filipino world champs.

Young, on the other hand, lost for the first time in his career following 17 wins and three draws. (PNA)
