PSEi up, peso slides in midweek trading

MANILA -- The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) ended Wednesday up while the peso weakened as investors took profits on earlier gains.

The main equities gauge rose 0.20 percent, or 16.06 points, to 7,926.69 points.

On the other hand, All Shares declined by 0.20 percent, or 9.57 points, to 4,876.98 points.

Most of the sectors also ended on the red, led by the Mining and Oil, which fell 2.05 percent. Services, Property, and Industrial dropped by 1.22 percent, 0.84 percent and 0.04 percent, respectively.

Financials and Holding Firms, meanwhile, rose by 1.06 percent and 0.68 percent, respectively.

Volume reached 790.4 million shares amounting to PHP7.1 billion.

Losers led gainers at 133 to 63 while 46 shares were unchanged.

The peso ended the day at 52.11 from 51.907 to a US dollar Tuesday.

A trader attributed this to profit-taking after the unit's recent improvement.

The local currency opened the trade flat at 52.00.

It traded between 51. 945 and 52.12, bringing the day's average to 52.024.

Volume totaled to USD1. 01 billion, up from the previous day's USD966. 28 million.

The currency pair is seen to trade between 51.90 and 52.10 Thursday. (PNA)
