CEBU CITY -- The Bureau of Customs–Port of Cebu on Thursday reported that it had surpassed its revenue collection goal for the month of July by PHP112.766 million.

BOC-Cebu Cash Division chief Conrado Abarintos said the Cebu port was able to collect PHP2.953 billion, which is 3.97 percent higher than PHP2.841 billion target for the month.

Abarintos said the July 2019 collection is higher by PHP465.354 million (19.18 percent) than the PHP2.478 billion collection in the same period of last year.

“Actually, we hit the target (collection) by noon of the last day of the collection month. The same top importers in Cebu like steel mills, power plants, and oil companies as the last collection months have contributed to our revenue collection record for this month,” Abarintos told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview.

Also, the BOC-Cebu office was able to collect around PHP60 million in duties and taxes from a corn importer who filed his import entry here, he said.

He said a Dumaguete-based oil company, Filoil, also paid around PHP450 million in duties and taxes for its oil importation last month.

The subport of Dumaguete led by acting Collector Fe Lluelyn Toring was able to collect PHP462.056 million which is 33.75 percent higher than the PHP345.450 million assigned target for July.

However, the subport of Mactan under acting Collector Elizabeth Mangsal was able to collect only PHP54.755 million which is 10.49 percent deficit of the assigned target of PHP61.175 million.

Meanwhile, Abarintos described this collection month as a challenge for BOC-Cebu, saying that superstitious investors would usually shun upon investing as they consider the eighth month of the year as “ghost month.”

“With the new policies of the new district collector considered by the customs stakeholders as adoptable in all fronts, we will do our best to meet the assigned target for August,” he said.

Abarintos said the BOC-Cebu’s revenue collection efforts has now been guided by the national valuation verification system (NVVS) which lays down the preference value in assessing imported goods as against the traditional reference value declared by the consignee.

He said consignees and brokers considered the NVVS as stakeholder-friendly. (PNA)
