MANILA -- Yeng Guiao will no longer be the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Men after he announced his resignation from the national team on Wednesday.

“I am stepping down, as of today, as the head coach of the Gilas Men’s Basketball Team, in order to give the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best," Guiao said in a statement posted by the SBP in its social media accounts.

The development happened after Gilas Men went winless after five games in the FIBA World Cup, with four of the losses by 20 points or more, in China.

"I am sorry we could not deliver a better performance," Guiao apologized. "I can only wish we could have performed better these past two weeks, but the odds were stacked against us. Nonetheless, I take full responsibility. I knew what conditions existed, what the limitations were, and still, I accepted the challenge. I hold myself responsible for the consequences."

Now that he is done as Gilas Men coach, Guiao can now focus on NLEX's campaign in the upcoming PBA Governors' Cup.

"I am now back home in NLEX to fully focus on winning our first championship," he continued.

In a separate statement, SBP president Al Panlilio thanked Guiao for his services.

"The SBP thanks him for his invaluable contributions and wishes him well in all his future endeavors," Panlilio said. (PNA)
