CEBU CITY -- The second largest electric utility in the country serving greater part of Metro Cebu has retooled its brand name VECO, and now wants to be known as Visayan Electric.

The name VECO or Visayan Electric Co. Inc. became an icon in Cebu after it was founded in 1905 by a group of Cebu businessmen, and has been known by the consumers in cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Naga and the municipalities of Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla, and San Fernando since then.

Anton Mari Perdices, chief operating officer of Visayan Electric, said rebranding the company name and introducing a new logo in lieu of the old brand are part of the rebranding of all power distribution utilities under Aboitiz Power Corp.

“Aboitiz Power does not just own Visayan Electric Company. It also manages Cotabato Light, Davao Light, Balamban Enerzone, Lima Enerzone, Mactan Enerzone, and Subic Enerzone,” Perdices said during a media luncheon gathering here on Tuesday as part of the 27th Press Freedom Week celebration.

The COO of Visayan Electric said the rebranding of the distribution utility company in Cebu wants to convey “one look, one feel, one brand, one atmosphere, and one character” to the public that it is serving.

The new logo emphasizes the substitution of the red lightning volt in the old VECO logo with a three diagonal straight line in cyan (blue) color, emphasizing a regenerated look dividing the two words of the new brand name, Visayan Electric.

Meanwhile, the power distribution firm also implemented its underground line distribution project along the Sinulog Grand Parade route in the downtown area here.

The Phase 1A of the project covering 650-meter stretch of the Capitol-Fuente Osmeña Rotunda corridor was completed in 2015, while the Phase 1B along the Osmeña Boulevard-P. del Rosario Street was completed in 2017, said Bailey del Castillo, vice president for Tech Support of Visayan Electric.

Del Castillo said the Phase 2 covering corner P. del Rosario Street and Osmeña Boulevard, which was finished last year, is a hybrid utility distribution system.

The 500-meter stretch of Gen. Maxilom Avenue corner Echavez Street up to corner D. Jakosalem Street is the project’s Phase 5, while the 630-meter Phase 6 covers Gen. Maxilom Avenue corner D. Jakosalem near the Iglesia ni Cristo church up to F. Ramos Street, he said.

Del Castillo further said the Phase 3 of the underground cable line system that will cover Imus Road corner Sikatuna Street up to corner Gen. Maxilom Avenue is targeted for completion by December this year.

The utility distribution firm’s effort to put power lines underground is in response to the call to rid the city of tangling unsightly wires.

The city government passed City Ordinance 1894 in 2001 requiring all public utilities to transfer their overhead utility cables underground. (PNA)
