BIÑAN -- Ceres Negros inched nearer to the Philippines Football League (PFL) championship after downing Stallion Laguna, 2-0, at the Biñan Football Stadium here on Sunday.

Bienve Marañon broke the ice for Ceres Negros in the 52nd minute, while Robert Mendy sealed the victory with the club's second goal just a minute later.

Ceres Negros, now leads the league table with 49 points, maintaining a nine-point lead against Kaya Iloilo, which edged Air Force, 2-1, at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Ceres Negros now only needs 12 points in their seven remaining matches to clinch the title officially.

Stallion Laguna, despite the defeat, remained in third place with 29 points.

In the other game, Kaya Iloilo barely escaped Air Force in its first game of the season at home.

Connor Tacagni drew first blood in the 38th minute, while Kenshiro Daniels added another in the 41st minute as Kaya Iloilo jumped to a 2-0 lead.

However, Alex Elnar put Air Force on the board just before halftime, and the team had a chance to tie after Glenn Bulaquina appeared to have scored an 89th minute header off a corner kick only for the referee to nullify the goal due to a foul on an Air Force player against Shirmar Felongco.

Kaya is now with 40 points, while Air Force remained at 11 points, missing out on a chance to overtake Mendiola for fifth place.

The other match of the day saw Global Makati and Green Archers United battling to a 2-2 draw at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, Batangas. (PNA)
