Espinas upsets former champ Cuello

MANILA -- Jessie 'Little Giant' Espinas of Oroquieta City pulled off an upset victory over former world champion Denver 'The Excitement' Cuello of Iloilo in a non-title fight on Saturday (Oct. 12) at the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque City.

The 26-year-old Espinas landed more telling blows to score a unanimous decision that halted Cuello’s five-winning streak.

Espinas got the scores of 97-93 both from judges Danilo Lopez and MA Tamano and 96-94 from judge Robert Bridges.

It was Espinas’ 20th win against four loses while the 32-year-old Cuello absorbed his six defeat in 50 fights marred with six draws.

Meanwhile, World Boxing Association (WBA) Asian Boxing Council Continental flyweight champion Ricardo 'Smiley' Sueno of Bacolod City scored a unanimous decision over Mateo Handig of Baguio in the under card, promoted by Gabriel 'Bebot' Elorde Jr.

Sueno improved his ring record to 10-3-4 while Handig suffered his fourth straight and 20th overall setback in 35 fights. (PNA)
