MANILA -- Nesthy Petecio became the second Filipino athlete to win a world championship in two consecutive days as she bagged a gold medal in the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in Ulan-Ude, Russia on Sunday.
Petecio defeated home country favorite Liudmila Vorontsova via a 3-2 split decision in the featherweight division final to bring home the bacon.
Petecio came alive in the third round, landing solid punches to Vorontsova to finish the bout strong.
Two judges gave Petecio identical 30-27 scores, while a third judge gave her a 29-28 lead.
Vorontsova got the nod from the other two judges with both having it 30-27 and 29-28 to her favor.
Petecio's victory came at the heels of Caloy Yulo's gold medal conquest in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday night (Oct. 12).
Aside from handing the Philippines its first-ever gymnastics gold medal at the world championships, Yulo also booked ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, ABAP President Ricky Vargas was elated with the result.
“Nesthy deserved the win. Not only because she fought brilliantly but also because she sacrificed so much for this. I am shedding tears of joy for her. Mabuhay ka, Nesthy," Vargas said
He also gave credit to coaches Boy Velasco and Reynaldo Galido for their mentorship.
“Actually, the entire ABAP coaching staff headed by Head Coach Pat Gaspi deserves the credit, including our foreign consultant Don Abnett. They did a great job,” Vargas added. (PNA)
