MANILA -- Malacañang on Monday lauded Nesthy Petecio for becoming the second Filipino athlete to win a world championship in two consecutive days as she bagged a gold medal in the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship.
Petecio’s win comes after Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo captured the country’s first gold medal in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday night.
“Our gold streak continues,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
Panelo said the entire nation is rejoicing Nesthy's triumph after beating hometown bet Liudmila Vorontsova via a 3-2 split decision in the featherweight division final in Ulan-Ude, Russia on Sunday.
“Indeed, it was a proud moment for Nesthy and the Philippines,” Panelo said.
The Palace official expressed hope that Petecio would make Filipinos proud once more as she competes in the scheduled Southeast Asian Games next month.
“We expect Nesthy to shine even more in the coming Southeast Asian Games to be held in Manila next month as she carries the flag with full pride and honor in front of her countrymen,” he added.
In 2012, Josie Gabuco bagged the previous world boxing championship gold for the Philippines. (PNA)
