MANILA -- Identity solutions provider, HID Global, has noted the importance of reliable and secure biometrics as it introduced its new fingerprint reader to the Philippine market.

Voice, facial recognition, and fingerprint are among the trusted things to identify a person's identity, said HID Global regional product marketing manager Nelson Fung in a press briefing in Makati City on Tuesday.

"Facial recognition (for instance) is easy to use but has low accuracy. Fingerprint (on the other hand) has high accuracy, and is easy to use and reliable," he said.

Data security, however, remains a concern for many, Fung added.

There are security threats to organizations, and biometric authentication is one of the fastest-growing segments in the access control market, he said.

The firm has introduced its iClass SE RB25F fingerprint reader last Tuesday.

The main advantage of having this, Fung said, is that the person's data or fingerprint template will be stored in a card, which he or she would keep. Thus, data will not be stored by the company or employers.

The card could also be used for double authentication purposes since it can be tapped on the device or fingerprint reader.

The device, Fung said, is also ideal for use in the hospitals or field, since it works even when the finger is dirty, wet, dry, or has latex gloves.

"It can be used even in outdoors. It works in different environmental conditions," he said.

Meanwhile, Fung said the reader could authenticate the fingerprint even if the person has dry skin, apparently because "it uses a multispectral technology that captures images from the surface and sub-surface of the skin".

Fung said HID Global's clients include the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. (PNA
