DUMAGUETE CITY – A seven-year-old girl who was being treated for symptoms similar to meningococcemia was cleared by local health authorities after tests turned out negative of the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria.
Dr. Mark Llosa, director of the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) here, told reporters during a press conference on Friday that the girl is about to be discharged.
He said that tests on blood samples from the patient turned out negative.
However, they are still awaiting results of a confirmatory test of the cerebrospinal fluid sample taken from the child and sent to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila, he said.
Nevertheless, even without the RITM result, Llosa said the girl is negative of meningococcemia. She was first brought to a private hospital last Jan. 22 after exhibiting symptoms of the meningococcal disease but was transferred later for isolation at the NOPH.
Llosa said the girl’s health is almost back to normal at present and the child is now considered ready for discharge. (PNA)
