MANILA – The Philippines Football League (PFL) moved the opening of its upcoming season a month later due to the continuous scare of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

"The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and Philippines Football League (PFL) have decided to postpone the Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways kick-off originally scheduled on 21 March 2020 to 18 April 2020 tentatively," the PFF, which operates the PFL, said in a statement on Friday.

The development came a day after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a community quarantine around Metro Manila as the number of people tested positive for Covid-19 in the country surges.

"Utmost priority must be accorded to the safety, health, and welfare of the players, coaching staff, match officials, sponsors, and others who are involved in the organization of the matches," the PFF said.

The PFL was the latest club sports league to announce the postponement of matches due to Covid-19.

The Philippine Basketball Association, the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball, and the National Basketball League have already postponed their games earlier in the week.

The Philippine Rugby Football Union also announced the postponement of the JML Luzon Cup, the PRFU Premiership Shield, and the Santos Knight Frank Junior Festival.

Like the PFL, the PRFU looks to resume action on April 18. (PNA)
