MANILA -- The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday reported 284 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-2019), bringing the total number in the country to 4,932.

During the Beat Covid-19 virtual briefing, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said there were 45 new recoveries, the total now stood at 242.

The number of new Covid-19 cases went up from Sunday's 220.

"We keep track of these people who are recovering sa kanilang mga bahay, hindi lang po kasama dun sa mga admitted patients na nakaka-recover. Ginagawan na po natin ng bilang ngayon ang mga taong ito para maibigay narin natin ang mga datos o impormasyon sa ating mga kababayan (in their homes, not only the admitted patients who recovered. We're working on the figures representing these people so we can provide the data or information to our fellowmen)," Vergeire said.

The total number of deaths is now 315, including the 18 new deaths reported as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Vergeire said guidelines have been issued in February as regards the management and disposal of the bodies of patients who died from Covid-19.

Under the department's memorandum 2020-0067, mortuary staff are trained and certified on handling death secondary to infectious disease.

"This is in harmony with the DC 2020-063 released by the DILG on March 27 which states the management of human remains due to Covid-19. This includes the role of the local government units and the funeral parlors, rest assured na tayo po ay directly na nakikipag-coordinate sa lahat ng mga ahensiyang ito para sa lahat ng mga kailangang gawin para ma-manage natin nang maayos ang (that we coordinate directly with all these agencies for on everything that must be done for the) disposal of the remains of those who died from Covid-19.
