MANILA – The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has recognized the professionalism of a police officer who recently accosted a foreigner for reportedly violating enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) rules inside a posh village in Makati City.
PCCI president Amb. Benedicto Yujuico, also chairman of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Regional Advisory Council, led the national leaders of the country's largest business organization in presenting to Senior Master Sgt. Roland Von Madrona the PNP Commendation Medal, Plaque of Appreciation, and Cheque Reward during simple ceremonies on Thursday at the Double Dragon Plaza in Pasay City.
Yujuico said Madrona displayed dedication and exemplary service when he remained calm and composed while accosting a foreigner who was visibly berating the Makati policeman, as shown in the video that went viral on social media.
“You (Madrona) are now an example and an ideal and perhaps even an icon that should be emulated by your colleagues in the PNP. Make sure that you always remember this and continue to do your best in the service of your country," Yujioco said in his address.
The recognition given to Madrona, Yujuico said, reflects the PCCI’s gratitude to the PNP for "its loyal and dedicated service to the nation.”
“All too often nowadays, negative news almost gets all the publicity – very few seem to care enough about the good things that are happening around us. Well, I would like you to know that PCCI cares about the good things that are happening,” he said. “And this is why we are thankful for moments like this because, through this award, we have an opportunity to express our thanks and gratitude to you,” he said.
The foreigner, Javier Parra Salvador of Spain, was charged with direct assault, resistance, and disobedience to a person of authority, unjust vexation, and violation of the "Bayanihan to Heal As One Act" for failure to wear a face mask in public.
Madrona responded to a complaint from the homeowners association of Dasmarinas Village that the house help of Salvador was not wearing a face mask while watering plants on the street in front of their house.
When he went to Salvador's residence, Madrona was confronted by the Spaniard, who yelled at the policeman and told him to leave.
Madrona kept his cool despite the verbal assaults until he was prompted to enforce the arrest and handcuff Salvador, who continued to resist. (PR)
