MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday reported 2,200 new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) infections, raising the country’s total infections to 74,390.
The DOH said the additional cases reported were based on the total tests done by 76 out of 90 operational laboratories.
The majority of the newly announced cases are from the National Capital Region (1,546), Cebu (246), Laguna (83), Rizal (61), and Cavite (48).
It also reported 760 new recoveries and 28 deaths. These figures bring the number of recoveries to 24,383 and the number of deaths to 1,871.
"Of the 28 deaths, 26 or 93 percent in July, one or 4 percent in May, one or 4 percent in April. Deaths were from Region 7, 21 or 75 percent and NCR, seven or 25 percent. Seventy-nine duplicates were removed from total case count and these numbers undergo constant cleaning and validation,” the DOH said.
The health department also noted that there are 48,136 active cases and about 90.1 percent of them are mild, 9.0 percent are asymptomatic, 0.5 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are critical.
“The reason for the increase in deaths is the reported deaths from Region 7 which were reported and entered our system just now. With this addition, our case fatality rate is 2.5 percent," DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a Covid-19 presser.
Vergeire added the age range of those who died is between 20 and 88 years old.
"About 14 or 40 percent of these dates are 60 years old and above that's why we remind our elderly population to be more careful in this time of the pandemic," she said.
As of Wednesday, a total of 1,152,597 individual tests were performed by the 68 licensed RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) laboratories and 23 licensed GeneXpert laboratories nationwide.
The DOH also has 15,919 total bed capacity dedicated to patients with Covid-19.
Occupied are about 53.2 percent of 1,384 intensive care unit beds; 51.4 percent of 10,700 isolation beds; and 59.1 percent of 3,835 ward beds.
There are 1,981 total ventilators for Covid-19 patients with about 29.2 percent in use. (PNA)
