MANILA – An official of UBX, the fintech arm of Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), said their systems, while being regularly updated, work even on slow internet connection to accommodate users in far-flung areas.

In a virtual briefing Wednesday, UBX chief executive officer (CEO) John Januszczak said their mobile applications can run on mobile devices even at a network capacity of 2G, or the second-generation cellular network.

“They’re designed out-of-the-box to be resilient and robust under spotty connection. All of our applications have online-offline capability so that they can still function offline and sync up later,” he said.

UnionBank continues to upgrade its information technology (IT) system and its officials said the bank was able to easily adapt to increased needs for digital banking when Luzon was placed under an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from middle of March to end of April, and end of May for the National Capital Region (NCR).

Among the innovative services that UnionBank and UBX currently have are the SeekCap, an online credit marketplace for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); the BUX, an embeddable payments platform for MSMEs; the XLog, a digital logistics platform and artificial intelligence (AI) technology using data that digital platforms generate; and the e-commerce platform, Sentro.

Januszczak said they have partnered with Globe Telecoms for a 5G network, which will benefit both the bank and their customers.

As more financial transactions can now be done online, a faster network connection will further boost capabilities that banks and their customers can take advantage of.

“As the entire nation transforms into this kind of technology, the features (of digital payment platforms) will increase exponentially,” he added. (PNA)
