MANILA – Users of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) in some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao will soon enjoy better mobile data services as the company expands its 5G network outside Luzon.

In a statement on Monday, Smart said its 5G rollout is ongoing in key areas of Boracay, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao -- two months after the company launched its 5G network in parts of the National Capital Region.

“These areas add to the live Smart 5G sites in Makati Central Business District (CBD), Bonifacio Global City CBD, Araneta City, Mall of Asia Bay Area, North Avenue in Quezon City, Taft Avenue in Manila, Ortigas CBD, New Clark City in Pampanga, Edsa, and in strategic locations in the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, and the cities of Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Parañaque, Valenzuela, Caloocan, Navotas, San Juan, and Pasay,” Smart said.

Alfredo Panlilio, Smart president and chief executive officer, said aside from expanding 5G in Visayas and Mindanao, Smart’s prepaid users will soon be able to connect to its 5G network.

“As we continue to lead the way in 5G in the Philippines, we are now bringing Smart 5G’s super-fast data service to even more customers as we expand into Visayas and Mindanao and extend our Smart 5G service to our prepaid customers as well,” Panlilio said.

Initially limited to its postpaid users, Smart said 5G is now available to prepaid users with 5G handsets, 5G-activated SIMs, and in 5G-covered areas.

5G, it said, offers “fiber-like” data speeds on mobile at “ultra-low latency,” enabling faster upload and download speeds for streaming high-resolution videos, playing online games, and others compared to 4G and other older networks. (PNA)
