MANILA – Even without a power supply agreement, the Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is temporarily providing power to electric cooperatives in the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon through its Bacon-Manito Geothermal Power Plant to reenergize these areas hit by Super Typhoon Rolly.

EDC has worked with Sorsogon I Electric Cooperative, Inc., Sorsogon II Electric Cooperative, Inc., Albay Electric Cooperative, Inc., and some large commercial establishments in the two provinces.

About 20 to 40 megawatts of power is temporarily provided by EDC’s BacMan geothermal facility since Nov. 7.

“We express our deepest gratitude to NGCP (National Grid Corp. of the Philippines) for making it possible for us to energize our two host areas that have about 400,000 households and a population of about 2 million,” EDC Facilities O&M Group senior vice president and head Liberato Virata said.

The normal setup and operations in Albay and Sorsogon will return once the NGCP grid line from Naga to Daraga has been restored and power will be supplied again from the grid, according to the EDC.

Data from the Department of Energy showed that as of 6 p.m. of Nov. 6, some 2,406 MW of power has been restored, but this does not include yet the reenergizing of the 140-MW BacMan power plant last Saturday.

The EDC also provided more than 2,300 sacks of rice to Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur as well as distributed food packs and bread to severely affected families in Guinobatan, Albay in partnership with the Lopez Group Foundation, Inc. (PNA)
