MANILA – Alaska coach Jeffrey Cariaso denied on Saturday Vic Manuel's claim that no one has been reaching out to him about a new contract following the end of his current deal at the end of last year.
"It is incorrect to claim that Alaska did not reach out to him. Alaska offered a two-year, maximum deal with a clause for the second year. The reason behind is completely explained to Vic and which like any other clause, considering the player's history with the team," Cariaso said in a statement.
He said the Aces contacted Manuel's agent Danny Espiritu twice after Christmas to discuss the new contract, the first on Dec. 26, 2020 and the other right on New Year's Eve.
Asked on Espiritu's reply, Cariaso said, "Pag-iisipan pa (It is still being pondered upon)."
Cariaso said he met with Manuel on Friday night to discuss the latter's thoughts.
"He was able to share with me his concerns, plans, and desires. He candidly expressed that his contract situation at almost 34 years old, makes him constantly think about his family's life after his career," Cariaso said of the meeting with the player.
However, he did not further divulge the details of the meeting.
"I will keep the details private to maintain respect," Cariaso said, adding that "all options were discussed."
However, Manuel reportedly reiterated to Cariaso his decision to leave the Aces after six seasons with them.
Manuel stunned Philippine Basketball Association fans on Thursday when he said he wants out of Alaska due to his claim that he was not reached out for an extension of service. (PNA)
