MANILA – Subsidiaries of Japanese firm Mitsubishi will be supplying power generation equipment that can cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emission to Energy Development Corporation’s (EDC) Palayan Binary Balance of Plant project.

Lombardy, Italy-based Turboden S.p.A., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), will provide the 29-megawatt binary cycle power generation equipment, while Mitsubishi Power will provide local support such as dispatching Philippine-based talents for the installation of the system.

“The new system will generate power making effective use of brine, which until now has merely been returned to a reinjection well. By replacing power in the power grid now derived from fossil fuels, etc., the new installation will enable reduction of CO2 emissions derived from steam power,” MHI said in a statement Wednesday.

It added Turboden’s 29-MW binary cycle power generation system can reduce CO2 emission by 72,000 tons annually, or equivalent to some 20,000 hectares of forest.

MHI said this carbon neutral power is expected to contribute to environmental and economic sustainability, not only in the Philippines, but in the region.

“This project has been selected as a project for the Financing Program for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Model Projects in fiscal year 2020 administered by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and its execution body, the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC),” MHI said.

EDC’s 23-MW Palayan Binary Plant will enhance the generation capacity of Bacon-Manito geothermal power plant.

The project is expected to be completed by 2022. (PNA)
