MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday reported 125 new infections with mutations of SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
In a statement, the DOH said 52 additional B.1.351 (South Africa) variant cases, 31 additional B.1.1.7 (UK) variant cases, and 42 additional cases with mutations of “potential clinical significance” were found among the ninth batch of 350 samples sequenced by the University of the Philippines – Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC).
“Samples comprising this run came from NCR (National Capital Region), Region 7, and returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) in response to the increased number of cases in these areas,” the DOH said.
Of the 52 cases who tested positive for the South Africa variant, 41 were from NCR while 11 are being verified whether they are local cases or returning overseas Filipinos (ROF).
“One case from NCR has recovered, while the remaining 51 cases are currently tagged as active and are being managed,” the DOH said.
For the UK variant cases, all 31 are currently active cases—28 of which are from NCR while three are being verified.
Meanwhile, of the 42 cases with mutations of potential clinical significance, 34 are from Region 7, six are from NCR, and two still under verification.
To date, it said 22 of the 34 cases from Region 7 have recovered while the remaining 12 cases from Region 7, six cases from NCR, and two cases being verified are currently active.
“The DOH and its concerned Centers for Health Development are coordinating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and local government units in NCR and Region 7 to institute measures to contain further transmission of these variants and mutations,” the DOH said.
It reminded the public of their “individual responsibility” to follow minimum public health standards at all times such as wearing masks, face shields, and observing physical distancing. (PNA)
