Stocks rise on risk-on sentiments; peso ends sideways

MANILA – The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) gained Wednesday on higher risk appetite among investors while the peso finished the day sideways against the greenback.
 
The main equities index gained 3.23 percent, or 214.26 points, to 6,841.69 points. 
 
Other counters also gained during the day, with All Shares up by 2.35 percent, or 94.68 points, to 4,117.98 points. 
 
Property index registered the highest increase among the sectoral gauges with 4.41 percent, and was trailed by the Holding Firms, 3.59 percent; Industrial, 2.54 percent; Services, 2.36 percent; Financials, 0.90 percent; and Mining and Oil, 0.81 percent. 
 
Volume totaled 1.9 billion shares amounting to PHP9.51 billion. 
 
Gainers led losers at 153 to 52, while 49 shares were unchanged. 
 
“Investors focused on buying into the Philippine market as optimism about the US economic recovery was overshadowed by its inflation concerns,” said Luis Limlingan, Regina Capital Development Corporation head of sales.
 
Meanwhile, the peso ended the day at 47.82, sideways from its 47.76 close a day ago. 
 
It opened the trade at 47.76 and traded between 47.87 and 47.76. This resulted in an average of 47.821. 
 
Volume totaled to USD1.04 billion, lower than the USD1.12 billion a day ago. (PNA)
