Stocks dip; peso nearly unchanged vs. dollar

MANILA – The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) ended in the negative territory on Wednesday but the peso closed sideways against the greenback.
 
The main equities index shed 0.76 percent, or 49.55 points, to 6,473.03 points. 
 
It was followed by all the other counters, with the All Shares down by 0.73 percent, or 29.66 points, to 4,010.09 points. 
 
The Financials index posted the biggest drop at 1.28 percent and was trailed by the Industrial, 1.16 percent; Mining and Oil, 0.97 percent; Property, 0.75 percent; Holding Firms, 0.47 percent; and Services. 0.29 percent. 
 
Volume reached 1.08 billion shares amounting to PHP4.49 billion. 
 
Decliners led advancers at 144 to 44, while 37 shares were unchanged. 
 
“Philippine shares fell again as the Chinese regulatory crackdown dampened the sentiment,” said Luis Limlingan, Regina Capital Development Corporation head of sales. 
 
He said investors are also monitoring earnings reports, as well as the Federal Reserve meeting. 
 
Meanwhile, the peso finished the trade at 50.37 from its 50.42 close on Tuesday. 
 
It opened the day at 50.4 and traded between 50.43 and 50.35. 
 
Average level for the day stood at 50.39. 
 
Volume totaled to USD686.5 million, lower than the previous session’s USD842.13 million. (PNA)
