MANILA – Some 200 Marikina City residents will be employed by a supermarket chain that opened a branch in the city, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said on Thursday.
“Ang pagbubukas ng SnR supermarket ay trabaho ang hatid sa mga taga Marikina sa gitna ng pandemya. Ang mga nirekomenda natin ay mga graduate ng PLMAR O Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina sa administration nila (The opening of the SnR supermarket will bring jobs to the people of Marikina in the midst of the pandemic. Those whom we recommended to be employed are graduates of PLMAR or Marikina City University in their administration),” Teodoro said during the opening of the 21st branch of the SnR Membership Shopping store along Sumulong Highway.
He said the opening of the supermarket is timely as it will provide employment as part of economic recovery efforts.
“It is important to provide jobs to our people amid the pandemic. Many people lost their jobs due to the pandemic’s economic impact,” he added.
As Teodoro inspected the premises of the supermarket, SnR president Anthony “Tony” Sy assured him that minimum public health standards are being strictly imposed inside SnR-Marikina.
The store provides high-quality, fresh produce, meat products, and freshly baked bread at a reasonable price.
The store's Marikina branch has strictly enforced minimum health and safety protocols during its opening.
“Ninety-five percent of our employees are Marikina residents. Some of our employees here are taken from other stores in order for them to train our new hires. It is very humbling that Mayor Marcy invited us here,” Sy said.
Sy also showed Teodoro the strict measures being undertaken by the store to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Aside from signages reminding people to practice social distancing, SnR also has personnel roving to remind shoppers to wear face masks and face shields at all times.
The supermarket also allotted space for the carts of shoppers so that there will still be able to practice social distancing as they queue at checkout counters.
Teodoro said the store will also boost the local economy as it will mean additional revenue for the city government which will help fund programs and social services for residents. (PNA)
