TACLOBAN CITY – The province of Biliran and Ormoc City are the two local governments in Eastern Visayas leading the vaccination drive against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) with at least 70 percent of its target population receiving protection against the deadly virus, the Department of Health (DOH) regional office here reported on Monday.
As of November 14, Biliran province has already recorded a 74 percent coverage rate or 93,602 of its 126,502 target population for the administration of Covid-19 jabs.
Ormoc City attained a 70.1 coverage rate when it administered vaccines to 117,768 out of the 165,156 target number of residents.
Areas that achieved over 50 percent inoculation coverage are Tacloban City (61.5 percent), Southern Leyte (51.5 percent), and Eastern Samar (50.4 percent).
The last three areas with lower vaccination coverage are Leyte (43.2 percent), Northern Samar (31.8 percent), and Samar province (31.7 percent).
“With the commitment of local chief executives all over the region to ramp up Covid-19 vaccination in the area, The DOH is confident that we will attain herd immunity by the end of the year,” said DOH Region 8 information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago in a message sent to reporters.
Overall, the region has achieved 44.3 percent vaccination coverage, giving at least the first dose of Covid-19 jabs to 1,490,538 residents out of the 3.36 million target population.
As of Nov. 15, Eastern Visayas has recorded 51,086 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 50,284 recoveries, 601 deaths, and 201 active cases. (PNA)
