DUMAGUETE CITY – Simulation volleyball matches featuring some schools in the country will be played here next week as "dry run" in preparation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) School Games to be held in the city in November.

City security consultant Rey Lyndon Lawas told the Philippine News Agency on Thursday that the simulation games will be from May 25-27, although the delegates will be arriving on May 24 or earlier.

“There will be 12 schools from different areas in the country that will be participating in the simulation games to be held at Foundation University here,” he said in mixed English and Cebuano.

Some of the schools sending volleyball teams are from Bacolod City, Davao, Leyte, Region 4-A, and the National University, among others, Lawas said.

Around 196 athletes and technical staff are expected to attend the simulation games, he added.

Lawas, who chairs the Committee on Security, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Response, said the games will be open to the public, but in a limited capacity to avoid transmission of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

All health and safety protocols will be implemented to ensure the safety of the delegates and the general public, he said.

“We have already formulated a plan for accommodation, transport, and other necessary requirements for the simulation,” he noted.

The ASEAN School Games is an annual sports event for secondary school student-athletes, with the Philippines identified as the host for this year’s event and Dumaguete City as the venue.

Running from November 19-27, this year’s games will see some 5,000 athletes from at least 10 Asean countries participating in eight events. (PNA)
