CAPAS – One of the toughest obstacle course races in the world is happening in the Philippines.

The New Clark City (NCC) Athletics Stadium here has been chosen as the site of the country's first Spartan Stadion race happening on Saturday.

This will be the said venue's first event it will host since reopening its doors amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

“Hosting this momentous race cements New Clark City’s profile as a prime venue for sporting events and as an ideal destination for developing strong athletes from all walks of life. We share Spartan Race Philippines’ vision of boosting Filipinos’ confidence in the country’s ability to recover from this health crisis through sports and wellness,” Bases Conversion Development Authority Senior Vice President Arrey Perez said during the press launch on Thursday at the NCC Athletics Stadium.

About 1,600 obstacle course racers from the Philippines and neighboring countries will participate in the five-kilometer, 20-obstacle race, which will take place in the stadium's exterior and interior.

The race will begin with the elite category at 8 a.m. followed by the start of the age groups at 8:15 a.m.

The open category will then begin at 9 a.m.

Also happening on Saturday is the Spartan Kids Qualifying Race.

Young obstacle racers will traverse through a 3.2-kilometer field with 20 obstacles also in and out of the NCC Athletics Stadium.

The under-14 category will begin at 10 a.m., while the under-11 event will start at 10:15 a.m. and the kids open will commence at 10:30 a.m.

The Spartan Kids race serves as the Philippine qualifier for the World Championship in the Bahamas.

As a prelude to the Spartan Stadion and Kids races, a marathon event called the Spartan Hurricane Heat 12 Hours will commence on Friday night also at the NCC Athletics Stadium. (PNA)
