MANILA – Customers in franchise areas of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) can expect lower electricity charges this August as the distribution utility announced to cut rates.

In an advisory Monday, Meralco said the overall power rate for August decreased by 20.87 centavos to PHP9.5459 per kilowatt hour from the PHP9.7545 per kilowatt hour last month.

This is the second straight month that Meralco implemented such an adjustment.

With the adjustment, a typical household consuming 200 kWh a month can expect a PHP42-decrease in the August electricity bill.

Meralco said despite the increase in transmission fees, it was offset by lower generation and distribution charges as well as taxes and other charges.

“The generation charge for August went down by PHP0.1944 to PHP6.5812 per kWh from PHP6.7756 per kWh last month due to the decrease in charges from Power Supply Agreements (PSAs),” it explained.

The distribution charges also went down by PHP0.0360 per kWh this month.

Meanwhile, Meralco said it will continue to implement the distribution-related refunds amounting to PHP48.3 billion as ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission. (PNA)
