SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Four towns in the province of Antique have suspended classes due to the heavy downpour brought about by the Low Pressure Area (LPA).

Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Broderick Train said in an interview Thursday that the towns of Anini-y and Tobias Fornier declared suspension of classes in all levels early this morning while the town of San Jose de Buenavista and Hamtic suspended classes in the afternoon.

"The four towns have suspended classes for both private and public schools because of the heavy downpour of rain caused by the low pressure area,” Train said.

While heavy rainfall, especially in the southern portion of the province has been monitored since Wednesday, yet there were no reports of flooding in those municipalities, he said.

He also said that the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Service Administration (PAG-ASA) raised the yellow warning level over Antique around 8 a.m. of Thursday, which means there is a possibility of flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.

“We had been monitoring also the Paliwan River and other water tributaries that had been affected then by the Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Paeng, but so far the water level had not risen much,” Train said.

The Paliwan River connecting the towns of Bugasong and Laua-an in the northern part of Antique experienced an overflow during the Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Paeng last year that damaged the Paliwan Bridge.

Train added that their monitoring of major roads in the province, especially from the border town of Hamtic, Antique to San Joaquin, Iloilo showed they are still passable.

“Nonetheless, I advise residents in Antique to just be on alert and monitor the situations in their areas,” Train said. (PNA)
