DAVAO CITY – The Davao Regional Development Council (RDC-11) has given its nod to prioritize the development of the Mati City Airport in Davao Oriental province.

In a statement Tuesday, RDC-11 said the Mati airport development with an estimated PHP375 million budget proposal will be used for the improvement of existing facilities that will support safe and efficient turbo propeller plane operation to accommodate flights.

Governor Corazon Malanyaon, RDC-11 chairperson, noted that extensive groundwork for the highly-anticipated airport continues as the provincial government remains hopeful of starting the airport’s operation soon.

Previously designed to cater to small jets, the short-term plan requires additional funds to establish the basic facilities necessary to allow the operation of the airport for commercial flights.

“The basic facilities include a terminal, a runway, a parking area, an apron to accommodate two to three aircraft, a control tower, a fire station, an administrative building, a concessionaire’s area, and an access road,” Malanyaon said.

Last year, Malanyaon, along with Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat, had initial meetings with the executives of the flag carrier Philippine Airlines that has expressed interest in scheduling regular flights in the province. (PNA)
