SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – A total of 760 jobseekers from the Ilocos Region were hired immediately during the Kalayaan Job Fair held in different venues on June 12.

In a phone interview on Tuesday, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 1 (Ilocos) information officer Justin Marbella said of the total hired-on-the-spot applicants, 102 were from Ilocos Norte, 163 from Ilocos Sur, 55 from La Union, 103 from Alaminos City, 161 from two venues in Dagupan City, 90 from Rosales town, and 86 from Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

“Candon City in Ilocos Sur has the most number of hired-on-the-spot applicants,” he said.

Marbella said there were a total of 2,955 jobseekers in the entire region while there were 28,571 available jobs or vacancies.

Of the total number of vacancies, 24,788 were in local employment while 3,783 were overseas.

He said the Ilocos Region ranked second in the highest number of hired-on-the-spot applicants and third in the highest number of total registered jobseekers in the entire country.

Among the venues of the recent annual Kalayaan Job Fair or the Independence Day Jobs Fair in the region were Robinsons Mall in San Nicolas Ilocos Norte; Candon Civic Center in Candon City, Ilocos Sur; and Mana Mall in San Fernando City, La Union; Don Leopoldo Sison Convention Center in Alaminos City; and Nepo Mall and SM Center Dagupan in Dagupan City.

“The venues were chosen by district so that it would not be hard for the job seekers,” Marbella said.

He added that the top five job types offered at the jobs fair were production operators, customer service representatives, microfinance officers, quality assurance inspectors, and construction workers.

Available jobs for medical professionals such as nurses and midwives, as well as teachers and English as second language tutors, and in the tourism industry like hotel workers were also offered. (PNA)
