TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) - Leyte field office has vowed to assist the seven learners that were injured when an ethyl alcohol accidentally exploded last week inside a classroom in Capoocan town, Leyte.

The DepEd said the medical needs of learners hurt by the accident is a top priority, in coordination with the family.

The school also offered support and assistance as well as psycho-social support services for affected students.

“We understand that this incident has caused concern and anxiety within the division. We want to assure the public that we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all our learners,” the DepEd said in a statement on Monday.

At least seven elementary students were hurt when their classmate accidentally ignited an ethyl alcohol inside their classroom last June 15.

The police reported that the explosion injured Grade 6 learners of the Capoocan Central School while their teacher, Niño Jake Borrel, was out for an interview by DepEd officials in nearby Leyte town.

The police also reported that the incident started when one of the victims, a 12-year-old, grabbed the empty bottle of alcohol placed on top of the teacher’s desk and refilled it with alcohol placed beside the desk.

Studies found that low-boiling alcohols vaporize readily, and when alcohol is placed in a small-mouthed container, it forms a volatile mixture with the air.

A simple match held by the mouth of the jug provides the activation energy needed for the combustion of the alcohol and air mixture. (PNA)
