CEBU CITY – The municipality of Alegria has temporarily suspended trailing and canyoneering activities due to some physical hazards that may pose danger to visitors.

Mayor Gilberto Magallon on Thursday issued a memorandum prohibiting activities around the canyoneering sites and the waterfalls in the area effective immediately.

“Based (on) the reports of monitoring in the trails for the canyoneering activities located in Barangay Compostela, Alegria, Cebu, it has been found out that the Wonder Falls is not advisable to any canyoneering activities due to the murky flow of the stream,” the Memorandum No. 016, series of 2023, reads.

He said the municipality’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office headed by Demond Kennith Platero recommended the temporary suspension after they found in their ocular inspection that the area is not safe for trailing due to slippery road trails.

Wonder Falls is known as a popular tourist destination in Alegria where many thrill-seekers visit for their canyoneering adventure.

The suspension of activities in Alegria came after Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia settled the conflict between the local government units (LGU) of Alegria and Badian over the jump points for visitors who would want to experience the adventure in the two towns’ canyoneering sites.

However, the temporary suspension of canyoneering activities in Alegria has nothing to do with the conflict between the two LGUs.

On Wednesday, the provincial government momentarily stopped the canyoneering and visitation at the Kawasan Falls as it plans to demolish some structures that pose a danger to local and foreign tourists visiting the area in line with their makeover efforts in the world-renowned tourist site.
