CEBU CITY – A circumferential and barangay road network worth PHP36 million is expected to spur the economy in Kinatarcan, the remotest tourism island frontier in Cebu province’s northwestern seaboard, a town official on Thursday said.
Mayor Ithamar Espinosa of Sta. Fe town on Bantayan Island said the three barangays in Kinatarcan Island with more than 2,000 population will benefit from the road network projects, citing its possible impact on the economy of the island.
Espinosa said the amount will be distributed in the island’s three barangays -- Hagdan, Bitoon and Langub.
“A large chunk of this, amounting to PHP33.9 million, was spent for the first phase of Kinatarcan Circumferential Road section which is now completed,” Espinosa said.
He said the road network, once all the phases are completed, will connect all three barangays.
According to a statement from Cebu Capitol, the 8-inch-thick concrete road project measures 3.6 kilometers in length and five meters wide while the construction of the 3.7-km long second phase is now underway.
On Wednesday, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia inaugurated the road network, including the barangay road concreting project.
Meanwhile, Kinatarcan was among the recipient of the Cebu provincial government’s street lighting project, as it received 28 solar-powered lamppost pedestals for the villages of Langub and Bitoon.
Kinatarcan Island, an island tourism site of Sta. Fe town, is known for its pristine beaches in Langub, the D’Clam Cave and the Laaw Lagoon. (PNA)
