CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Camiguin provincial government has deactivated its mandatory African swine fever (ASF) footbaths within its borders except for one municipality.

In a statement Monday, Governor Xavier Jesus Romualdo said four municipalities will no longer require the ASF footbaths for persons on board vehicles except in Sagay town.

"All persons on board vehicles exiting Sagay must still alight from their vehicles and step on the footbaths on the municipality's borders," he said.

In addition, the governor said border control points and animal quarantine checkpoints will remain in place to regulate and monitor the transport of live hogs, including their meat and by-products.

ASF footbaths and biosecurity and animal quarantine measures will also continue in airports and seaports of the province, he added.

Meanwhile, Novie T. Suello, the Department of Agriculture-Northern Mindanao (Region 10)  regulatory division focal person, said the last province infected with ASF was Camiguin, while Bukidnon and Misamis Occidental remain ASF-free.

Two other provinces under Region 10 are Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental.

"If we get complacent, ASF may re-occur, so we must have correct biosecurity measures in our piggery," he said.

In March this year, DA mplemented strict border control measures across the region by requiring transporters of live pigs and pork products with travel documents.

Local government units are also encouraged to establish Biosecurity Level 1 measure in farms in compliance with minimum standards set by the Philippine College of Swine Practitioners. (PNA)
