ALAMINOS CITY, Pangasinan – The construction of a 364-meter flood mitigation structure worth PHP72 million in this city is underway and is expected to be completed this year.

In a statement on Friday, Department of Public Works and Highways(DPWH) - Ilocos Region information officer Esperanza Tinaza said the flood mitigation structure will help prevent floods from causing disruptions to the local economy.

The structure was set up along the Alaminos River which tends to overflow during the rainy season and weather disturbances with heavy rains.

“It can protect the community against potential damages and other unfortunate events that could harm the lives of the people and provide defense against damages that can affect the community,” she said.

The construction of the structure which is located in Barangay Pogo, this city started in April this year.

Tinaza said the project was funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2023.

Meanwhile, she said the other DPWH projects in this province include the completion of two interconnecting barangay roads in the villages of Lobong and Capaoay in San Jacinto town that have connected to Pozorrubio town and has reduced the travel time from 40 minutes to 10 to15 minutes.

The construction of the 6.9-kilometer concrete road project was completed in the last quarter of 2022 and has since helped the locals in transporting agricultural goods to traders and consumers, making it more efficient both locally and beyond the region, she added.

“This improved infrastructure is expected to boost demand for local products and create potential opportunities for international exports,” she said, adding that San Jacinto town yields crops such as corn, grains, and cassava, and the community has now successfully cultivated exotic and high-end dragon fruit or Pitaya.

The construction of the concrete road project was funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2022, in the amount of PHP48.9 million. (PNA)
