BACOLOD CITY – Some 4,520 residents in this provincial capital while 32,670 in 13 local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have been displaced by heavy rains, strong winds and floods brought about by Super Typhoon Egay, reports have showed.
In Bacolod, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported flood-hit residents have sought shelter in 25 evacuation centers across the city as of Wednesday morning.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said the city accumulated heavy rainfall from 8 p.m. on July 24 to 2 p.m. on July 25 as recorded by the CDRRMO, resulting in many flooded barangays in the city.
Several families have been rescued in certain areas of Barangays Sum-ag, Pahanocoy, and Singcang-Airport, which were hit by knee-to neck-deep flood waters.
At the provincial capitol, the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) reported Wednesday noon that 125 barangays have been affected in the cities of Cadiz, Sagay, Silay, Bago, and Sipalay as well as in the municipalities of Don Salvador Benedicto, Pontevedra, San Enrique, Valladolid, Pulupandan, La Castellana, Cauayan and Hinoba-an.
“These were based on the different situational reports submitted by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center report,” PDMPD head Irene Bel Ploteña said.
Of the total number of affected individuals, only 1,136 are staying in various evacuation centers.
A total of 167 damaged houses were also reported in six localities, including the cities of Cadiz, Sagay, Silay, and the municipalities of San Enrique, Pontevedra and Hinoba-an.
Listed were 18 damaged houses and 149 partially damaged homes located in 11 villages.
Work in the offices of the city government here as well as in the provincial government of Negros has been suspended for another day after office operations halted Tuesday noon due to inclement weather. (PNA)
