MANILA – The Department of Information and Communications Technology deployed satellite internet in remote areas hit by Typhoon Egay (Doksuri) last week.

In a statement Tuesday, the DICT said its regional offices in Regions 1 and 2 provided the equipment in the remote areas of Sitio Bucarot in Adams, Ilocos Norte, and Barangay Balatubat in Camiguin Island, Calayan, Cagayan.

“At Barangay Balatubat, a rapid damage assessment and needs analysis were conducted in the aftermath of Egay,” it said.

Sitio Bucarot is a mountainous area inhabited by the Isnag tribe while Barangay Balatubat is one of three barangays in Camiguin Island.

“Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) were installed in Bangued, Abra, and Calayan, Cagayan to enhance connectivity and ensure continued emergency communications,” it said.

The operation is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s order to provide more satellite connectivity in far-flung areas affected by the typhoon so that they can relay their needs to concerned government agencies.

“By ensuring connectivity in far-flung areas, the DICT promises that no Filipino will be left behind, most especially during these challenging times. We will be there to help our countrymen in Northern Luzon get back on their feet and recover,” it said.

On Saturday, Marcos visited the town of Bangued, Abra and pledged to provide more pieces of satellite equipment in remote areas.

During the event, government agencies also distributed assistance to local residents. (PNA)
