MANILA – The Manila City government on Thursday suspended classes in all levels amid enhanced monsoon rains and reported flooding.

In a Viber message, the Manila Public Information Office (PIO) announced the suspension around 5 a.m. after flooding was reported in several areas.

"As recommended by the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) and the Manila Police District, classes are suspended today, August 3, 2023, for all levels, public and private, face to face and online," the Manila PIO said.

Likewise, it assured transportation aid to affected commuters in the city.

"Libreng sakay (free rides) operations have been activated as well since 4 a.m.," the Manila PIO added.

As of 8:26 a.m., the Manila DRRMO reported above gutter-deep flooding in areas along UN Avenue Station southbound and Taft NBI Parking/Exit.

Gutter-deep floods were also monitored from Padre Faura to UN Avenue Station.

According to the Manila Project's localized 24-hour weather forecast, cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in the city due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.

3 injured as 6 electric poles collapse in Binondo

Meanwhile, the city government reported three injuries following the sudden collapse of electric posts at Quintin Paredes and Ongpin streets in Binondo around 1 p.m. Monday.

In a statement, the Manila Public Information Office (PIO) assured immediate attention to the injured individuals.

"Three victims were reported to have minor injuries and are currently in the hospital," it said.

Manila Vice Mayor John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto conducted an inspection in the area.

"Anim na poste 'yung nakatumba, tapos dalawang poste 'yung nakatabingi. Medyo mabibigat 'yung ano niya [kable], parang nag-overload (There were six fallen posts and two other slanted. The wires are somehow heavy, it seemed like an overload)," he said in a Facebook live interview.

Based on the Manila Police District’s (MPD) initial report, around eight vehicles and a bicycle were damaged.

Nieto said the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is targeting to clear the area by Friday.

The electricity in the area is temporarily shut off for the "safety of responders and residents."

Present on-site were responders from the Bureau of Fire Manila, Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Emergency Medical Services and personnel from Meralco.

According to the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau, roads in the entire Plaza Ruiz are temporarily closed for inspection and clearing operations. (PNA)
