MANILA – House Committee on Appropriations Chairman, Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Elizaldy Co, is counting on the collective efforts of his colleagues to ensure “timely passage” of the proposed PHP5.768 trillion 2024 national budget.
"Your dedication, cooperation, and willingness to lend a helping hand have been the driving force behind its timely passage. I am deeply honored and humbled by the strength of our collective efforts," he said during the executive meeting on Tuesday.
Co said the 2024 national budget is “critically and pressingly” needed to propel the country forward and improve the lives of Filipinos.
"Let us also look ahead with renewed optimism and enthusiasm as we again give our full support to the immediate consideration and passage of the PHP5.768 trillion FY (fiscal year) 2024 proposed budget submitted by the President to Congress last August 2, 2023,” he said.
“Our journey continues, and together, we will face these new challenges and build upon the foundation of economic transformation embodied in the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028," he added.
Co emphasized the need to thoroughly scrutinize the budget’s provision with an open mind and innovative approach toward greater transparency and better implementation of programs and projects under the 8-Point Socio-Economic Agenda to achieve a more sustainable and inclusive economy.
To facilitate the efficient approval process, the committee has approved the budget calendar for deliberation and approval.
On top of the budget calendar, Co said the committee has thoroughly discussed the rules and procedures governing budget briefings or hearings.
These rules, he said, are designed to enhance transparency, encourage active participation from stakeholders, and foster rigorous scrutiny of budgetary allocations and expenditures.
By implementing comprehensive rules and procedures, the committee seeks to maximize the impact of every allocated peso and uphold the utmost accountability in budget implementation, he said.
