MANILA – The Canadian government announced on Wednesday CAD380,000 or approximately PHP16 million in humanitarian aid to support relief efforts in Cagayan and areas battered by recent Typhoon Egay.
In a statement, the Canadian Embassy in Manila said the assistance will focus on the provision of emergency shelter, cash aid, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services, among others.
“Canada is allocating CAD380,000 in humanitarian assistance to the Philippines to support the most vulnerable families affected by Typhoon Egay, including the hard-hit province of Cagayan,” it said.
The funding will be channeled through Canada’s Humanitarian Coalition and the Canadian Red Cross to support relief operations being conducted by Oxfam Canada and the Philippine Red Cross.
Egay made landfall in Cagayan on July 26 and was followed by Typhoon Falcon, which both enhanced the southwest monsoon from July 22 to Aug. 3, bringing significant amounts of rain to different parts of the country.
Fatalities recorded by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) totaled 30, while 171 were reported injured and nine missing.
Based on the latest NDRRMC data, the weather disturbances have so far affected more than 1.3 million families or around 5.3 million people in 14 regions, with Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon being hit the most. (PNA)
