CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Low-income persons with disabilities (PWDs) here stand to receive PHP500 monthly allowance following the passage of an ordinance.

In a statement Thursday, City PWD Affairs Office head Ma. Liza Corpuz said the monthly allowance will materialize after the 20th City Council passed Ordinance No. 2023-274, or the "Social Pension for Indigent Adults and Children with Disabilities," early this week.

To qualify, Corpuz said PWDs must be city residents for at least two years and have proof of indigence. The ordinance also covers PWD children below 18 years old.

"This is a fulfillment of her promise to the sector when she took her oath of office. Hats off to Kagawad (Councilor) Girlie. Thank you for being true to your words," said Corpuz, who is also a PWD.

Corpuz was referring to 2nd District Councilor Joyleen Mercedes Balaba, the ordinance's principal author.

Balaba said there are more than 2,000 indigent PWDs in the city that will benefit from the ordinance.

The social pension will take effect next year while the City Social Welfare and Development, together with the Philippine Statistics Agency and City Planning Office, is still consolidating the total number of beneficiaries. (PNA)
