MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) revealed on Tuesday that the suspect in the death of 32-year-old Marjorette Gonzales Garcia, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Saudi Arabia, was the victim's foreign acquaintance.

Speaking at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing, DFA Assistant Secretary Paul Raymund Cortes said the suspect is now under the custody of local authorities in Saudi Arabia and an investigation is underway.

Cortes said Garcia was found bleeding due to stab wounds and was immediately brought by the local police to a hospital where she died.

“Itong suspect ay hindi Pinoy so ibang lahi siya (The suspect is not a Filipino but a foreigner),” he said.

“As far as we know magkakilala, hindi pa tapos ang investigation pero sa tingin ko parang co-worker kung kaya’t we’re waiting for the investigation and the result (As far as we know they know each other, the investigation is not yet finished but I think the suspect is a co-worker that’s why we’re waiting for the investigation and the result),” he added.

Once the investigation is over, Cortes said Garcia’s remains would be released for repatriation to the Philippines.

Garcia has been working in the Middle Eastern country since 2021, according to the Department of Migrant Workers. (PNA)
