San Sebastian upsets JRU in NCAA men's basketball

MANILA – San Sebastian College stunned Jose Rizal University (JRU), 72-59, to claim its second win in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 at Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday.

Jessie Sumoda scored 15 points as the Stags came back strong in the second half to send the Heavy Bombers to only their second loss against four wins.

The Stags trailed 18-9 after the opening period and forced a 31-all deadlock at the half.

Entering the final canto, San Sebastian was up, 55-46, and sustained momentum all the way.

Raymart Escobido and Alex Desoyo added 12 points each; Rommel Calahat had 11 points and eight rebounds; and Rafael Are chipped in nine points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists.

Agem Miranda finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals for JRU.

JRU (2-3) trails unbeaten Lyceum (7-0), Mapua (4-1) and San Sebastian (4-2)

In the other game, College of Saint Benilde downed Perpetual Help, 86-80, to rise to 3-3.

The Altas fell to 1-5.

Meanwhile, Lyceum will gun for win No. 7 against Emilio Aguinaldo College (2-2) on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Mapua will be up against skidding defending champion Letran College (0-5) at 4 p.m.
